April A-Z Challenge, April 17, Letter O: Movie Review – Ocean’s Eleven (2001)

Movie Synopsis: Danny Ocean and 11 accomplices form a group with a mission: rob three Las Vegas casinos simultaneously, owned by the contemptuous Terry Benedict.

Movie Review: This film was highly anticipated based on the number of high profile actors involved, including George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and Julia Roberts.  The film centres around a large group plotting to rob three Las Vegas casinos.  The acting was fantastic in the film, with great chemistry between the various characters, to be expected given the caliber of stars here.  There was also a good mix of drama, action, and comedy written into the screenplay.  That being said, one detraction for me in this movie was that it felt very repetitive and it had the sense of being “done before.”  Not only was it a remake of an older Frank Sinatra film (that is exceptional), there have been many other casino-style films and caper films made in the past, and this one just didn’t have that much going for it that made it stand out as distinctive or unique. We have seen this kind of group plot before, and it wasn’t original.  Although it was certainly an amusing and enjoyable film, I would say there was a lack of originality even despite the fact it was a remake to begin with.  It reminded me of a cover song, when the cover doesn’t stand out particularly well.

Overall: 3 stars out of 5 stars.
